Addictions

Addictions can take may forms. The most common are alcohol and other drugs (AOD), however other addictions such as pornography, gambling, internet, and food are also challenging to live with and overcome. These often present alongside other psychological issues and can feel like they help to manage stress, anxiety, and even depression, however they can actually make things worse. Addictions refer to patterns of behaviours that impact social, occupational or academic functioning. These behaviours are often learned attempts to self soothe or avoid painful experiences. The challenge with addictions is that the avoidance of sobriety can make it painfully unpleasant, and escaping reality can often feel safer. At Adaptive Counselling and Psychology, we can provide practical strategies to support managing addictions, and explore the underlying reasons for their development. Get in touch to see find out more.
